I love this lesson on Probability of Multiple Events. You get to give your students things they can actually touch. There are many simulators out there that you can use to get them to see the bell curves and all that boring stuff. The part I love is handing my students a deck of cards, a pair of dice, and a quarter then asking them questions. I always start with take the 4 Aces and the quarter, what is the probability of drawing the Ace of Spades and flipping a Heads?

Though this isn’t hard to figure out I give them time to play and draw a conclusion. Then I go right for the knock out to prove counting isn’t always realistic or even possible. I ask them to use the whole deck of cards and tell me what the probability is of drawing the Ace of Spades then the King of Hearts simultaneously and flipping a Heads with the Quarter.

This will blow their minds because they will think they can count it, then they will think they can guess it, then they will realize they need some kind of formula.
